Okay, I am going to ask a couple of questions that have been haunting me. Do you believe you have or will have the ability to develop such an ambitious game? If you are waiting until you have more capital to begin hiring the designers with the ability to create your dream, at what funding level would you begin bringing full-time employees on?
I am not being a downer here, because I believe you all know I fully support this game and the studio, however, I can't help but worry because another game had very ambitious goals and we all know how that ended. I am in NO way comparing Rulers of the Sea and Deadeye Games to that disaster, but I think the questions are reasonable. Please do not think me rude.
I'd be interested in knowing if there is a Roadmap yet?
Ironically, there's an entire forum category entitled Game Development. A lot of those concerns are mentioned there. Also, there's a great search feature at the top of the forums that works really well too. You should check those out.
Oh, and to the question, "Do you believe you have or will have the ability to develop such an ambitious game?", I'm confident that the answer is a resounding "Yes!", otherwise none of this would exist.
Haha, Rodion has a good point, the answer to the question is self evident. We have invested so much time and money in this project ourselves, not to speak of reputation, obviously because we do believe we can indeed build this game.
But I do understand the question. Imagine if YOU are anxious about this question, one of our greatest supporters, how WE can feel? To have invested so much time and money (not only our savings in the project, but especially missed income, because we are foregoing jobs at our previous level to have time for this. Me personally, I have started this design in 2016, alone, and now a team of 20 and a community of over 25K believe in this. That can be quite scary if you think about it too much. What if it doesn't happen? All the people I would disappoint? There are moments when you have that little pang of fear.
But then I shake myself out of it. Alexander Pushkin said: "It is better to have dreamed a thousand dreams that never were than never to have dreamed at all." We all share a dream here, and dreams are not for the faint of heart.
In our present safe western lives in modern society we are not used to risks anymore. I think of those people in 1750. They lived their daily lives on the edge of death as it was, if you got sick, good chance you would die. Catch a fever, break a bone, get a cut, good chance it would kill you. Childbirth, so often a killer for mother, child or both. 50% of children didn't make it to adulthood. Those were different odds than we can imagine, to even live, let alone succeed at anything! And then I think of that soldier in the line, ready for battle. Knowing that soon a wall of lead balls was coming your way. Or that sailor, setting off on a journey of years of which less than 50% would return alive. How would they feel about risk? And yet I wonder whether they weren't, at their best days, happier than most of us. If you have ever have lived under an immediate threat of death and survived, and I have had that experience a few times, than you feel so elated later, and so much more prepared to just take the risks to go for a dream. Because you know that really, that is the only thing that really matters in this live. To strive for the greater things!
All the things that you enjoy most today (apart from people), were at one time impossible dreams. Their creators have been told it could not be done. And probably they were right, chances were slim. Safer to quit. My great mentor Jean-Luc Picard said: Things are impossible until they are not.
But after all these ruminations - an injection of reality:
We're not inventing the light bulb here. The gramophone. The laser disc. The electric car or the orbital rocket. This is an MMORPG. Many have been made before, many are under construction as we speak, many will be made in the future. Plenty of independent projects among them. There is not a single piece of technology in our design that has not already been used somewhere. It's just a different way of putting the components together. It's like we are introducing a new type car. Technically impossible? Hardly. Challenging? Yes.
So when can we fully develop?
Getting the expertise to build this game is not hard. We get applications from developers and artists every day. Those are usually people that only look at a job title, not the text, and send their CV, so they expect we can pay. We reject most of them now as they wouldn't work for shares. We also get headhunting agencies offering their services, or remote development studios from low wage countries, always several a week. You wouldn't believe how many there are. MMORPG's are the most challenging and exciting game projects around, it's the premier league of game development. There is a lot of interest. Once we can pay wages we will be able to collect all the qualified staff, of that there is little doubt.
The Netherlands is a country with labour protection. This means we can't just fire people, you need to offer a level of security. We can hire on an hourly basis, but that doesn't offer reliable staff, while things like coding or art need to be done consistently, for long periods, by the same people, to be sound. So if you want to do a long term project such as ours, you need to hire on contract for your core team. The reasonable way to do that, is to offer year contracts which you can extend. Legally we're allowed to extend such a contract twice, and then it needs to become a permanent contract (or quit).
An employment contract, on average, will cost 100K euro per year. That is including taxes, office space, workstation, insurance, HR costs, etc., etc. The employee will get about two thirds of that (before tax).
So imagine we raise 1 million, then we can hire 10 people for one year. That's quite a serious development team. Enough for the core team to start. Ultimately we're looking for a peak team size of 50, we'll start out smaller and end up smaller. 17 million would get us 170 year contracts, 56 full-timers a year for 3 years. That's a lot more than we need for staffing, and that is because we also need budget for marketing, licences, hardware, etc. And we will also not employ everyone on employment contract, we'll do plenty of free-lance hiring too. But not the core team members, those you want dedicated.
But the reality is that I will only start hiring once I can guarantee a person (core member) at least a year. So this is a multitude of 100K. I don't want to risk bankruptcy, so we need to be sure in advance we can pay out on our employment contracts. And having one full-timer and nothing else is not much of a team. So I'd say at 500K raised we can make a start with hiring, at 1mio raised we can really start making some considerable progress, at 5 mio we have our first full year of development fully funded.
Many independent MMORPG projects have managed to raise something in the neighbourhood of 2 million from the community, and the rest has to come from different sources.
I don't think it is financially unrealistic at all. It happens every day. You have access to the investor forum. Check out the news section where we share investment news in game projects. Investment funds, angel investors, private equity, publishers, they invest millions in game projects, also independent game projects, all the time!
In budget we're not a particularly large MMORPG development. If you compare it with some others, often also independent projects, that we know the budgets of, we're in the lower league. (some of these games are older, some fully financed but not yet released independents)
So why not us? We have a professional team with a sound business background, that is something we share with a lot of the best independent MMORPG projects. Investors like that. And we are building a great community, that are even willing to invest, not only time but money, the greatest proof of commitment you can offer. That is our proof of concept.
And technically our project is not hugely challenging. The design has already been conceptualised in a deep level of detail, we are able to calculate it, we have turned it into a technical design. We cannot find one aspect of it for which there do not exist tried and tested solutions. We can create this with off the shelf platforms and applications. The only thing with our design is that it's a lot of work! And additionally, in our budgeting, we have included a continual investment in community management, because we want to make this a community development. We want to use the community for content and art enrichment. So that makes it different, and challenging, too.

For this very early phase there is a road map:
This development is very much still focused on community development. As we will gain more progress in the team development, it will shift to more actual game development. We are now developing small game components, but with the aim of also being able to engage with the community. Like a map or a character creator, etc.
Remember this has all been realised so far with volunteers. No-one gets paid here. That puts limitations on any planning.

As I said, I am a huge supporter, but occasionally doubts do arise. I appreciate your answer. I have faith but like all faith there come questions. I did look and really didn't find the direct answers similar to what you provided.
I agree without dreams we wouldn't have many of the things we do today. I also understand risks are not the same as today, but we also have more disposable income then we did in those days and we all know a lot of people who try to separate those fools and their money. I am not saying Deadeye is such an endeavor, I just know a lot of folks were seriously burned, but I also believe you are being incredibly transparent with your communications, which is a HUGE plus in my book.
I love your dream, which is why I am here. I am excited to be following the journey. I do apologize if my post came across as me being insecure about the project because honestly I am not, but sometimes you know, the brain does stupid stuff lol.
I don't mind at all. These are all good questions. And especially you, both a shareholder and a sponsor, have every right to scrutinise the project. The moment our answers are no longer forthright and transparent you should begin to doubt the project.
That being said, we're all in the same boat and there is a definite risk in any large project. So I'm not promising success. We came quite a distance already, but there are still miles and miles to go on this adventure. There will definitely be setbacks and disappointments, we had our share already. This will not always be smooth sailing, success or not.
All I can promise is that whatever happens, nothing relevant will be kept from the community. If we are to fail, everybody, and especially the investors, will know exactly why and when.

I can put up a roadmap for the entire build, because we do have a rudimentary 3-year project plan.
But you know, in this early stage, that's just baked air, because as long as we're still in the funding phase, we can't be sure how fast and at what speed we can start that plan up. So putting that up now, it is probably just going to give the impression of promises not made. It's too soon.
So we're keeping it simple for now. The plan now, first stage, is getting financing, and in the mean time, getting up things for the community as best as we can. Which also already contributes to the project, because those are small parts of the actual game.

The following definitions apply to these Terms and Conditions of Administration:
a) “STAK DG”: Stichting Administratiekantoor Deadeye Games (being Deadeye Games Foundation Trust Office), with its registered office in The Hague, the Netherlands and registered with the Chamber of Commerce under number 76228029;
b) “Company” or “DG BV”: the private limited liability company: Deadeye Games B.V., having its registered office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and registered with the Chamber of Commerce under number 75214474;
c) “Board” or “Directors”: the Board of Directors of STAK DG;
d) “Share” or “Shares”: a share or shares in DG BV;
e) “Share Certificate” or “Share Certificates”: the rights that are granted after transfer of ownership under title of management of a share of DG BV to STAK DG or after issue of a share by DG BV to STAK DG under STAK DG administered shares;
f) “Share Certificate holder” or “Share Certificate holders”: a holder or holders of one or more share certificates;
g) “Written”: by mail, electronic mail (email) or by any other means of communication capable of transferring written text and signatures;
h) “Gamer Shares”: the share certificates issued by STAK DG; and
i) These Terms and Conditions of Administration (hereafter also to be named: TCA) apply to the so-called Gamer Shares / share certificates.
STAK DG is the sole beneficiary of the shares it acquired and is, with the exclusion of everyone else, entitled to exercise all rights associated to those shares, such as voting rights, rights to claims and rights to dividends, all subject to the provisions of the Articles of Incorporation of DG BV and/or the Articles of Incorporation of STAK DG, as they read now or in the future, and with due observance of these TCA.
If share certificates belong to a community (and/or undivided estate), each member is entitled to exercise the rights attached to the share certificates in proportion to his/her share in the community of certificates. The members can only be represented vis-à-vis STAK DG by one person to be designated in writing.
STAK DG will charge costs for the certification, management and administration of shares to DG BV. STAK DG does not charge share certificate holders (additional) costs other than the one percent (1%) costs upon both buying and selling the share certificates.
The voting rights and all other controlling rights attached to the shares are exercised by STAK DG at its own discretion, taking into account the provisions of the Law, the Articles of Incorporation of STAK DG and these TCA.
Except in the situations provided for in Article 12 of the TCA, share certificate holders cannot claim the administered shares. The cancellation of the share certificates can only be done against the cancellation of the underlying shares.
The administration ends:
At the end of the administration, the share certificates are de-certified (converted into shares) and the corresponding shares will be transferred to the share certificate holders.
STAK DG will immediately (within five (5) working days after the publication of the annual report of DG BV) give the share certificate holders the opportunity to become acquainted with these documents.
In the event of liquidation of DG BV, the surplus will be paid immediately (within five (5) working days) to the share certificate holders while simultaneously canceling the share certificates.
In addition to the provisions in these CTA, the administration of share certificates is also subject to the provisions of the Articles of Incorporation of STAK DG.
The Board is authorized to change these TCA. When a change is made, the Board will immediately notify all the share certificate holders accordingly. The same applies to a change to the Articles of Incorporation of STAK DG. In both case, the Board will inform all share certificate holders in writing, to the (e-mail) addresses referred to in Article 5. For the sake of completeness, a change in the TCA can only be made by unanimous vote in a meeting of the STAK DG Board of Directors, in which all Board Members are present or represented. If not all Members of the Board are present or represented in a Board Meeting in which a proposal to change the TCA is on the agenda, then a second meeting will be convened, to be held within fourteen (14) days after the first, in which, regardless of the number of Board Members present, a valid decision will be made by unanimous vote. Similarly, it can be decided to fully or partially cancel share certificates issued by STAK DG or to dissolve STAK DG. Upon dissolution of STAK DG, all underlying shares will be transferred to the holders of the corresponding share certificates.
Each holder of share certificates is deemed, by obtaining these share certificates (whether or not upon issue), to declare towards STAK DG, the Board and DG BV to be aware of the possible tax consequences of his/her participation in the capital of DG BV through the share certificates and/or exercising his/her rights therefrom. STAK DG and the Board bear no responsibility towards the share certificate holders in this regard.
Insofar as taxes and/or social security contributions are due by STAK DG with regard to acquiring the share certificates by share certificate holders, STAK DG can recover these taxes and/or premiums from the share certificate holder concerned.
Dutch law is applicable to the TCA.
In case of a dispute the Dutch version of the TCA shall prevail.
Deadeye Games B.V. is a private company with limited liability and incorporated under the laws of the Netherlands, having its registered office in The Hague and its principal place of business at XX . Deadeye Games is the developer of the RotS game. Deadeye Games B.V. is sometimes also referred to as “Deadeye Games”; “we”, “us” or “our”.
Keep in mind that most of the information or other material posted in the Community is user generated and not official support provided by us. As with any information or advice, obtained through any medium, you should use your judgment and exercise caution where appropriate, regardless of from whom such material originates. RotS moderators may remove or edit user posts that, in our sole discretion, violate the Guidelines or the Terms of Services without prior notification to the author. Remember that use of the Community in conflict with the Guidelines or the Terms of Services also may result in immediate termination or suspension of your support account. Deadeye Games is the developer of the RotS game. Deadeye Games B.V. is sometimes also referred to as “Deadeye Games”; “we”, “us” or “our”.
In order to use the Community, you must (1) have an existing RotS account; and (2) create a “Community Account” by following the instructions on the Community registration page. You must ensure that your registration information is true, accurate and complete, and that you keep it up to date. We may reclaim or amend your username at any time. It is strictly prohibited to include any information in your profile that suggests you are a Deadeye Games B.V. employee or moderator, or to otherwise pose as such an employee or moderator when using the Community.
Information, advice or other material of any kind posted on the Community (“Content”) is not official support provided by Deadeye Games. For official support with account related and payment related questions, please submit a ticket to our customer service department using the contact button. You acknowledge that opinions expressed in Content on the Community are those of contributors of such Content only and does not reflect the opinions or policies of Deadeye Games or its affiliates or group companies.

These Community Terms will become effective in relation to you when you create a RotS Community Account and will remain in effect until you terminate your RotS Community Account or the earlier termination by us thereof. Without limiting its other rights to terminate access to the Community, we reserves the right to terminate or suspend your RotS Community Account at any time if, in our sole discretion, you are in contravention of any of the Terms. If we terminates or suspends your RotS Community Account for any reason whatsoever, we or other companies of the Deadeye Games Group, shall have no liability or responsibility to you. Please note that if your RotS Community Account is terminated by you or us for any reason, Content that you have posted may be kept in the Community in an anonymized form.
The use of the Community is at your own risk. The Community is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. To the fullest extent possible under applicable law, we give no warranty, express or implied, as to the quality, content and availability or fitness for a specific purpose of the Community. In addition, we do not warrant, endorse, guarantee or assume responsibility for any Content posted on the Community or any hyperlinked website. In no event shall Deadeye Games, its group companies officers, directors, employees, licensors of RotS or any third parties be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages (including but not limited to any loss of data, service interruption, computer failure or pecuniary loss) arising out of the use of or inability to use the Community, even if you have advised us about the possibility of such loss, and including any damages resulting therefrom. Your only right with respect to any problems or dissatisfaction with the Community is to terminate your account as set out in Section 9 above and to stop using the Community. Nothing in these Community Terms removes or limits our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation, death or personal injury caused by its negligence.
You agree to indemnify and hold Deadeye Games, the Deadeye Games Group and its officers, directors, employees and licensors harmless from any claim or demand (including but not limited to reasonable legal fees) made by a third party due to or arising out of or related to your violation of these Community Terms or the Guidelines, or your violation of any laws, regulations or third party rights.
We respect intellectual property rights, and expect you to do the same. Please note therefore that the Community is the property of Deadeye Games, its group companies or its licensors and is protected by intellectual property rights (including but not limited to copyright) and that you do not have a right to use the Community in any manner not covered by these Community Terms.
We will make reasonable efforts to keep the Community operational. However, certain technical difficulties or maintenance may, from time to time, result in temporary interruptions. We reserve the right at any time and from time to time to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the Community or any of its functions and features with or without notice. If we modifies or discontinues the Community for any of the reasons set out above in this Section 14, we or any other company of the Deadeye Games Group, shall have no liability or responsibility to you.
We may change the Guidelines at any time, at its sole discretion. Any material changes will be communicated to you and your acceptance of and/or continued use of the Community after such notification of change will constitute your acceptance of such changes. Please do not use the Community if you do not agree to the new Terms.
In the event that the Community Terms and Guidelines are translated into other languages and there is a discrepancy between the two language versions, the English language version shall prevail.
We may assign its rights and obligations in connection these Community Terms without restrictions. You may not assign your rights or obligations in connection these Community or your Community Account, or any part thereof, to any third party.

We process your Personal Data in the following ways:
Through your use of the Rulers of the Sea Services – when you use the Rulers of the Sea Services, we collect Personal Data about your use of the Rulers of the Sea Services such as your email address, date of birth, gender and country;
Personal Data collected that enables us to provide you with additional features/functionalities – from time to time, you also may provide us with additional Personal Data or give us your permission to collect additional Personal Data e.g. to provide you with more features or functionalities. As described further below (see Voluntary Data), we will not collect photos, precise mobile device location, voice data, or contacts from your device without your prior consent. You always will have the option to change your mind and withdraw your consent at any time.
In general, we use log files to monitor traffic on our Website and to troubleshoot technical problems. In the event of user abuse of our Website, we may block certain IP addresses.
We (will) use anonymised and aggregated information to optimize your experience of the Rulers of the Sea Services but also for purposes that include testing our IT systems, research, data analysis, creating marketing and promotion models, improving the Rulers of the Sea Services, and developing new features and functionality within the Rulers of the Sea Services.
In addition to Sections 5.1 and 5.2, if we reasonably suspect that any of the Rulers of the Sea Services or your Account is being or has been misused, including without limitation, by virtue of any:
Deadeye Games B.V. may collect further Personal Data and Non-Personal Data to verify or refute such suspicions within the limits of applicable law and taking into account your reasonable data protection interests. We will use this Data to comply with applicable law and enforce our rights under civil and penal law against the respective users.
Optionally you may choose to send crash reports or contact Customer Support for any technical and commercial issues.

The collection of the data set out in this Section 5.4 is not mandatory. However, we might not be able to fix bugs or handle the technical and commercial issues you have without this data. For legal reasons this information will be stored as long as your account remains open and for the applicable statues of limitations thereafter.

We keep your Personal Data only as long as necessary to provide you with the Rulers of the Sea Service and for legitimate and essential business purposes, such as maintaining the performance of the Deadeye Games Services, making data-driven business decisions about new features and offerings, complying with our legal obligations, and resolving disputes. We keep some of your Personal Data for as long as you are a user of the game.
If you request, we will delete or anonymise your Personal Data so that it no longer identifies you, unless, we are legally allowed or required to maintain certain Personal Data, including situations such as the following:
Deadeye Games B.V. might share your Personal Data globally with other companies in the Deadeye Games B.V. Group in order to carry out the activities specified in this Policy. Deadeye Games B.V. may also subcontract processing to, or share your Personal Data with, third parties located in countries other than your home country. Your personal data, therefore, may be subject to privacy laws that are different from those in your country of residence.
Personal Data collected within the European Union and Switzerland may, for example, be transferred to and processed by third parties located in a country outside of the European Union and Switzerland. In such instances Deadeye Games B.V. will ensure that the transfer of your Personal Data is carried out in accordance with applicable privacy laws and, in particular, that appropriate contractual, technical, and organizational measures are in place such as the Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the EU Commission.

We may display advertisements from third parties and other content that links to third-party websites. We cannot control or be held responsible for third parties’ privacy practices and content. If you click on a third-party advertisement or link, please understand that you are leaving the Rulers of the Sea Service and any Personal Data you provide will not be covered by this Policy. Please read their privacy policies to find out how they collect process and protect your Personal Data.
We are committed to protecting our users’ Personal Data. We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to help protect the security of your Personal Data; however, please note that no system is ever completely secure. We have implemented various policies including pseudonymisation, encryption, access, and retention policies to guard against unauthorized access and unnecessary retention of Personal Data in our systems.
Your password protects your user account, so we encourage you to use a unique and strong password, limit access to your computer and browser, and log out after having used the Rulers of the Sea Services.
The Rulers of the Sea Services are not directed to children under the age of 13 years. However, in some countries, stricter age limits may apply under local law. Please see our Terms of Services for further details.
We do not knowingly collect Personal Data from children under 13 years or under the applicable age limit (the “Age Limit”). If you are under the Age Limit, please do not use the Rulers of the Sea Services, and do not provide any Personal Data to us.
If you are a parent of a child under the Age Limit and become aware that your child has provided Personal Data to Rulers of the Sea, please contact us using the form on the Privacy Center, and you may request exercise of your applicable rights detailed in the ‘Your rights and your preferences: Giving you choice and control’ Section 4 of this Policy.
If we learn that we have collected the Personal Data of a child under the age of 13 years, we will take reasonable steps to delete the Personal Data. This may require us to delete the Rulers of the Sea account for that child.
We will occasionally update this Policy. When we make material updates to this Policy, we will provide you with prominent notice as appropriate under the circumstances, e.g., by displaying a prominent notice within the Rulers of the Sea Services or by sending you an email.
Please, therefore, make sure you read any such notice carefully. Annually this Policy will be reviewed for accuracy and changes in GDPR. If no material changes are made, you will not be notified.
